I just read Dr. Chaim Y. Botwinick\u2019s insightful article about the challenging and changing roles of head of schools. It featured twenty common sense leadership principles. Dr. Botwinick wrote them to help heads of school \u201cevolve, develop and grow as true inspiring leaders, role models and exemplars of leadership excellence.\u201d I share them here in the hopes that some, if not all, <u>will<\/u>\u00a0resonate with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(Dr. Botwinick is the author of <em>\u201cThink Excellence: Harnessing Your Power to Succeed Beyond Greatness\u201d (Brown Books, 2011)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1. Always strive to delegate and empower others, utilizing the strengths of your team members; channel and direct their strengths.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2. You don\u2019t need to have all the answers; or be the expert in everything; if you don\u2019t have the right answers, seek them out from others who may.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3. Always seek advice and authentic feedback from your staff and faculty.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">4. Hold everyone, including yourself accountable.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">5. Exhibit <em>Derech Eretz<\/em>, empathy and compassion for your students, staff, faculty and parents.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">6. Be passionate about your job.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">7. The school\u2019s core values, mission and vision is your road map and compass, use them wisely and strategically.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8. Take risks, but ensure your decisions are well-informed and data driven.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">9. Trust is earned not acquired \u2013 it should never be transactional.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">10. Admit mistakes, but don\u2019t overly apologize or misdirect the blame (never play the blame-game).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">11. Give credit where credit is due \u2013 always seek ways to celebrate your faculty and staff.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">12. Keep your Board of Directors informed continuously \u2013 no surprises.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">13. Always keep your team motivated.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">14. Act decisively \u2013 procrastination will paralyze.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">15. Build leadership in others.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">16. Think and act strategically.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">17. Develop your own professional goals in partnership with your Board of Directors and always manage Board expectations.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">18. Articulate your vision with clarity and conviction.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">19. Don\u2019t mistake \u201csizzle for stake\u201d \u2013 it\u2019s not about charisma, it\u2019s about substance.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">20.
