Surely, you\u00a0<\/strong>can<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0check the boxes and then some. You have:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0Immunization and health forms<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0Emergency contact numbers<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0Lice checks before school and after vacations<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0Policies about children returning to school after illness<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0Nutrition Week<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Healthy Strides
\n<\/span><\/span><\/strong>But \u2013 after you check off these health basics, do your day-to-day policies encourage good health?<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you still have candy and soda machines?
\n<\/span>When you choose a student fundraising activity do you opt for a candy sale or a walkathon?
\n<\/span>Do you encourage students and teachers (if it is feasible) to walk or ride bicycles to school?<\/span><\/p>\n

Nigel Savage of HAZON shared that in his office, they don\u2019t only advocate bicycle riding \u2013 as a healthy and green transportation option \u2013 they provide indoor bicycle racks!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Healthy Standards
\n<\/strong><\/span>Other health promoting ideas through possible systemic change:<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you encourage teachers to use the stairs not the elevators?
\n<\/span>Do you provide extra physical activity<\/strong> opportunities for students and teachers to exercise \u2013 or at least walk around the building?
\n<\/span>Do you have stress-reducing systems in place to mentor new teachers and provide continued support for veteran instructors?
\n<\/span>Do you offer teachers decent heath care benefits and sufficient sick days so they don\u2019t come to work when ill?<\/span><\/p>\n

So, while you are relaxing on the beach, with sunscreen of course, take a few minutes to analyze your schools policies in terms of promoting good health.<\/span><\/p>\n

Enjoy the rest of the summer\u2026 in good health!<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
